A patchbay (or patch panel) in recording equipment is a central hub that allows for the routing of audio signals between different pieces of equipment in a recording studio. It simplifies the process of connecting various audio devices like microphones, preamps, mixers, outboard gear, and digital audio interfaces.
Types of Patchbays
- Analog Patchbays:
- Typically use 1/4″ TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) or TT (Tiny Telephone) jacks. They handle analog audio signals and are commonly used in traditional recording studios.
- Digital Patchbays:
- These handle digital audio signals and use connectors like AES/EBU, ADAT, or MADI. They are used in studios that employ a lot of digital equipment.
